Flying High with the West Coast Eagles

West Coast Eagles Round 17 Team

They are dropping like flies at the moment, another 4 changes for Saturday’s game vs. St Kilda.

West Coast
B: Mark Nicoski, Eric Mackenzie, Tyson Stenglein
HB: Adam Selwood, Beau Wilkes, Andrew Embley
C: Michael Braun, Matt Priddis, Brent Staker
HF: David Wirrpanda, Ashley Hansen, Steven Armstrong
F: Mark LeCras, Quinten Lynch, Mark Seaby
Foll: Dean Cox, Chad Fletcher, Jamie McNamara
I/C: Brad Ebert, Ben McKinley, Scott Selwood, Matt Spangher
EMG: Tim Houlihan, Pat McGinnity, Tony Notte

In: Braun, Armstrong, Seaby, Spangher
Out: Kennedy (knee), Glass (thigh), Houlihan, Davis.

Not surprised to see Houlihan and Davis get rotated out after it was noted they were down in last week’s game. Glass has finally conceded to injury and Kennedy is out again with another knee injury.

It means Braun and Armstrong are back, along with third gamer Matt Spangher and forgotten ruck man Mark Seaby. I really think we’re a bit top heavy to be honest, but with the Saints playing two recognised followers I guess we do what we usually do and reactively match them up. I’d probably prefer we trial some more run as our last few games at Subi have exposed us badly across the ground.

Having said that, injuries are biting as can be evidenced by two yet-to-debut youngsters in McGinnity and Notte being named in the emergencies.

The real question is can we avert a record equally 8 straight loss?

  1. A four quarter effort, thats all I want and is it that hard to ask for?
    Whos captain? Cox?

Think its good to see Seaby back and McNamara to get two games in a row.
It would be interesting to see Spangear, Wilkes and Mackenzie play against the Saints forward line. I think one of these wont be at the club next year so this is their chance to prove themselves.

  2. I reckon all of those three will make the cut for next year. Go Seabs, show us what you’re made of. Or if not, remind all the other potential trading clubs how good you can be.

  3. Well summed up Fordy :)

  4. That was unexpected - made my weekend though. Hopefully, with the young inconsistent team we have, this is the start of the highs getting higher and the lows levelling out to a decent level of performance. There’s still some pain ahead but this is exactly the kind of game that makes it easier to take.

    How about Staker, eh? ;)

  5. Yes Staker was awesome. Think he just saved his career with the Eagles. Lynch was also used very well. Think MaKenzie and Wilkes played very well but Spangear was disappointing along with Fletcher and Embley (although he did chase hard) did not rise to the same level that the other young guy splayed at.

Some other players who had question marks alongside their name performed very well and they were:
    Seaby - great last quarter
Armstrong - still a bit dicey when the ball is on the ground but tried hard
MacNamara - his dash and run from the back line was great
Ebert - Now I understand why the SA teams want him next year, needs to get fitter tho
S Selwood - bit sloppy in disposal but was good around packs

Also good to see Rosa sign again :)

I’ll stand up for Staker’s weekend effort as well. Unbelievable. The question is, does he believe he’s up to it? He looked almost appologetic after his fourth quarter goal. Or was he jus stuffed?
Maybe as an impact player off the bench is his best fit. Let’s face it, we’ve tried every other position.
We should keep Seaby. It’s a bit stiff to measure his output against Cox. And clearly Lynch offers more around the ground than he can at the ball ups or throw ins.
Especially good to win at home against St Kilda after last years flaccid effort. The last thing we need to do is give the Vics some thought that the’re a chance over here.
