West Coast Eagles 2/3rd Season Review Part 3
Hunter, Adam
HT:190 WT:88 2008 Games: 10 2009 Age:28
2008 Grade: C Injury has taken the wind out of the 2007 Club Champion R/Ups sails. Hopefully we will see him settle into a forward line role for the rest of 08.
2009 Status: Retain
Hurn, Shannon
HT:186 WT:94 2008 Games: 6 2009 Age: 22
2008 Grade: C- Like so many of his teammates his hopes for 08 have been cut short by injury. Integral part of the future.
2009 Status: Retain
Jones, Brett
HT: 189 WT: 94 2008 Games: 13 2009 Age:27
2008 Grade: A- Has been a vital cog in our defence all season as a reliable negator and rebounder. Barring further injury will figure in Club Champion calculations.
2009 Status: Retain
Jones, Chad
HT: 196 WT: 98 2008 Games: 3 2009 Age: 25
2008 Grade: D Promises much but has yet to deliver at the top level. Bad timing with injury has robbed him of an extended chance at AFL level. Would be lucky to survive next season.
2009 Status: Trade / Delist
Kennedy, Josh
HT: 195 WT: 93 2008 Games: 5 2009 Age: 22
2008 Grade: C Has performed strongly when fit and has shown enough to suggest his hard leading, strong marking and straight kicking will be a massive asset in our forward line.
2009 Status: Retain
Kerr, Daniel
HT: 178 WT:77 2008 Games: 10 2009 Age: 26
2008 Grade: B- Plenty has conspired to keep Kerr off the park in 08 - it has not been his year. His good though is sorely needed in this team’s midfield and is felt when he’s missing.
2009 Status: Retain
LeCras, Mark
HT: 183 WT: 78 2008 Games: 4 2009 Age: 23
2008 Grade: C Been good in the games he’s played but a groin injury caused him to miss ten weeks and needs to be watched. Was excellent in 07 and need him firing.
2009 Status: Retain
Lynch, Quinten
HT: 194 WT: 102 2008 Games: 14 2009 Age: 26
2008 Grade: B Has been used in a variety of roles in 08 which has meant a decrease in his goal scoring. Solid and versatile.
2009 Status: Retain
Mackenzie, Eric
HT: 196 WT: 94 2008 Games: 0 2009 Age: 21
2008 Grade: D No games for McKenzie after one last season. Will be hoping to show his wares before the end of the season. High hopes as a key back, but has been surpassed by Wilkes.
2009 Status: Retain.
Masten, Chris
HT: 179 WT: 77 2008 Games: 9 2009 Age: 20
2008 Grade: C+ Some compare Masten’s season to his WA U/18s teammate Palmer and say we took the wrong guy, but Masten has been hampered by a groin injury that has limited his mobility. Will be much better once he gets right.
2009 Status: Retain
McGinnity, Patrick
HT: 182 WT: 75 2008 Games: 0 2009 Age: 20
2008 Grade: C Has good running capacity and is improving at WAFL level. More of a rookie type at this stage and is probably a little bit off AFL level. Still young and will improve.
2009 Status: Retain
McKinley, Ben
HT: 184 WT: 86 2008 Games: 10 2009 Age: 22
2008 Grade: B Has come from the brink of delisting to being our top goal scorer in a couple of months. I can’t fathom how so suggest we trade him. Is still developing but has great attributes for a forward - just what we need!
2009 Status: Retain
McNamara, Jamie
HT: 183 WT: 81 2008 Games: 4 2009 Age: 21
2008 Grade: C+ I like Jamie’s game. He’s been unlucky to only have played 4 games and as an unheralded 20 year old has great prospects. Can probably work on his skills some more but is very promising.
2009 Status: Retain
Nicoski, Mark
HT: 187 WT: 84 2008 Games: 11 2009 Age: 26
2008 Grade: C- Statistically has been good, but the true story is Nico has not come along given his physical attributes. Has lacked composure too often and at 25 could be put on the trading block.
2009 Status: Trade
Notte, Tony
HT: 194 WT: 72 2008 Games: 0 2009 Age: 19
2008 Grade: C Is coming along as expected: slowly. Gifted athletically, by slight of frame and so is a longer term project. Could come along as a key forward in a couple of seasons.
2009 Status: Retain
Priddis, Matthew
HT: 184 WT: 85 2008 Games: 10 2009 Age: 24
2008 Grade: B Like Kerr we are much better side when Priddis is in the side. Missed 4 weeks with a leg injury and has had some up and down games. Needs to probably refine his game in order to be more damaging, but otherwise Priddis has been good.
2009 Status: Retain
Rosa, Matthew
HT: 189 WT: 80 2008 Games: 8 2009 Age: 23
2008 Grade: C+ Has had some excellent games but has also been dropped and is now injured. Speculation he could be traded, but I’d be included to keep him around as a dashing winger.
2009 Status: Retain
Schofield, Will
HT: 195 WT: 84 2008 Games: 8 2009 Age: 20
2008 Grade: B+ A big fan of Will’s game. Tall, fast, agile and defensively minded Schofield could become a premier defender in the Fletcher / Bassett mould. Still very much a rookie at 19 but development at this stage is very promising.
2009 Status: Retain
Seaby, Mark
HT: 200 WT: 100 2008 Games: 8 2009 Age: 25
2008 Grade: D Very disappointing season for Seabs. Has really gone backwards and has shuffled between WAFL and AFL. Lynch has been preferred as Coxy’s back-up and I think Seaby could be looking elsewhere in 2009.
2009 Status: Trade
Selwood, Adam
HT: 189 WT: 82 2008 Games: 14 2009 Age: 25
2008 Grade: A I’m a big fan of A. Selwood’s work, and he has improved as the season has progressed. Week in and week out gets the biggest opposition mid / forward and comes out on top more often than not. Great on field example.
2009 Status: Retain
Selwood, Scott
HT: 185 WT: 80 2008 Games: 2 2009 Age: 19
2008 Grade: C The youngest player on the list has played 2 games and if not for injury might’ve played more. Still developing physically but will be a player.
2009 Status: Retain
Spangher, Matthew
HT: 193 WT: 90 2008 Games: 2 2009 Age:22
2008 Grade: C Played 2 games and acquited himself well. Needs to be more consistent at WAFL level but after 2 injury plagued season is benefiting from the time on the field.
2009 Status: Retain
Staker, Brent
HT: 196 WT: 95 2008 Games: 11 2009 Age: 25
2008 Grade: C- I don’t know Brent. 100 games and still inconsistent as ever. I don’t know long you can be promising and yet only deliver one game in 5? I think Brent might be traded at the end of the season.
2009 Status: Trade
Stenglein, Tyson
HT:189 WT: 89 2008 Games: 14 2009 Age: 29
2008 Grade: B- Has struggled to adapt his game which successfully enabled the likes of Judd and Cousins to prosper and to take on greater responsibility in the midfield. Still has plenty to offer and needs to impose himself more as a midfield on field leader.
2009 Status: Retain
Thomson, James
HT: 194 WT: 83 2008 Games: 0 2009 Age: 21
2008 Grade: D Hasn’t yet blossomed as a player, and whilst still young may struggle to retain a place on the list in 09. Needs to find a position and play consistent 4 qtr footy to be considered at the next level.
2009 Status: Likely Retain
Waters, Beau
HT: 188 WT: 84 2008 Games: 8 2009 Age: 23
2008 Grade: C- Eight games is the only return we get from Beau in 08 due to injury and suspension. Still definitely a best 22 player.
2009 Status: Retain
Wilkes, Beau
HT: 194 WT: 93 2008 Games: 6 2009 Age: 23
2008 Grade: B Has come from no-where (well, the rookie list actually) to play 6 games so far. Great find as a developing key back with good hands and smart disposal.
2009 Status: Retain / Upgrade
Wirrpanda, David
HT: 173 WT: 84 2008 Games: 12 2009 Age: 30
2008 Grade: B Not the Wirra of old but has bobbed up to play some important roles as a small forward. Looks like playing on and is no doubt a positive influence around the club.
2009 Status: Retain
Arrowsmith, Ashley
HT: 189 WT: 84 2008 Games: 0 2009 Age: 20
2008 Grade: C- Early days, nothing special to comment on but has at least played senior WAFL after switching to Peel Thunder.
2009 Status: Retain
Davis, Ryan
HT: 189 WT: 78 2008 Games: 5 2009 Age: 20
2008 Grade: B- What a great find! Has emerged out of no-where to be one of the key rookies in the side this season. Excellent prospect as an attacking half-back.
2009 Status: Retain / Upgrade
Stevenson, Lewis
HT: 185 WT: 79 2008 Games: 0 2009 Age: 20
2008 Grade:D Not getting a game at Claremont is not a great sign.
2009 Status: Delist / Retain
Sullivan, Will
HT: 202 WT: 88 2008 Games: 0 2009 Age: 20
2008 Grade:C Good signs for the young ruckman, strong competitor in the ruck contests and will continue to develop rounding out his game. Suitable Cox Insurance
2009 Status: Retain
Wilson, Callum
HT:191 WT:89 2008 Games:0 2009 Age: 21
2008 Grade:C- Solid WAFL key position player. Not sure what we’re expecting him to become but as added insurance is probably physically AFL ready although I’m not convinced about his overall ability.
2009 Status: Retain / Delist

Agree that we should look at trading Seaby especially if we get Nicholas (but would personally rather Rich).
I would like to keep Rosa and McKinley but can understand why they may be offered (both non WA) as bait. I think Rosa could be a good wingman as you say (see some similarities as Mainwaring) and McKinley in a forward line of Kennedy, Wirra, LeCras and either Hansen or Lynch could be very dangerous…

I’m a Staker fan, if only to annoy the morons around me at Subi who ignore all the good stuff he does (indeed, do nothing to support the team at all), but start shouting abuse as soon as he makes a blue. Plus I can’t see that we’d get value for him in a trade, so I’d retain him. Nicoski, same, I can’t see us getting a better player with the pick we’d get for him, would probably only be a small upgrade in the draft anyway.
Otherwise, good summary. The club looks like having at least 3, maybe 4 picks in the draft (Braun & Fletcher retired/pushed; Seaby, Thomson and Armstrong traded or delisted; upgrade Davis) so it should be a very interesting one.
Jul 10th 2008
and upgrade the CHB rookie..
Jul 10th 2008
I don’t think we will delist Staker, but I’d put him up for anyone who wants to give us something decent. I reckon we could get some nibbles - he is a great athlete and does have ability. It’s consistency that’s his problem and another environment could bring it out.
Nicoski I’m not so sure about. He has even less value than Staker as a trading chip. I know he’s still getting a game but I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes.
Wilkes will be permanently upgraded I think as well. Takes Graham’s spot.
Jul 11th 2008
Yes Wilkes thats the guy, he has shown promise. About time though as he was on the Rookie list for a few years.
I think Staker, Seaby (although he is contracted), Nicoski, Graham and maybe Rosa will be offered as Trade Bait. I only think Staker, Seaby and Rosa will generate any interest though. What is also important to note is that this years draft has a few key forwards and ruckman which is likely what the Eagles will also offer…
Jul 11th 2008
Everyone talks about trading Rosa. Has he indicated a desire to go back to Victoria? He’s not from Melb., he’s from Ballarat and Vic Country guys seem less mummy’s boys than certain Vic Metro types.
I’d like to keep him, personally.
Jul 14th 2008
Judd, hint hint (mummys boy)
I think we should keep him as well and I have not heard anything about him ‘home sick’ (for mums apron)
Jul 18th 2008
Staker for Davis + draft pick???
http://afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=63609
Jul 18th 2008
Wow - who knew Nick Davis was an Eagles fan. I reckon his age would go against him. If we were challenging maybe, but I can’t see him coming to us.
Jul 19th 2008
Yeah he would just take up a LeCras or McKinkley spot in the side and I know we now do not have a party boy with Chick, Cousins etc out but do we want another? Could you imagine how much trouble he could get up to with Embley and Kerr??? No thanks…
He would imo be worth a try at another club tho. Carlton needs another avenue at goals as well as maybe Freo or even Adelaide but no to the Eagles..
