Ben Cousins In Arrested on Suspicion of Drug Possession

bcousins10-07.jpgThis is shocking news, yet somehow in the aftermath of this season the image of Cousins shirtless flanked by Police was not totally out of place.

[tag]Ben Cousins[/tag], Brownlow Medalist, former captain and confessed substance abuser has now been [tag]arrested[/tag] by Police for suspected drug possession in dramatic fashion in Northbridge this morning. Cousins was with recently delisted Eagle Daniel Chick and is now facing the very real possibility that his AFL career is over.

The 2007 has not been kind to all those connected with the [tag]West Coast Eagles[/tag] football club and today’s news serves to remind us the year is not yet over. Whilst the full details of this saga are not yet known, the circumstances do not lend themselves to a positive outcome for Cousins. Given the stringent conditions that we are lead to believe are in his current re-worked contract that allowed him to return to the field after a rehab stint in Malibu, it would seem highly likely Cousins contract will be terminated by either the AFL or the Eagles.

Given the devastating circumstances in which former dual premiership wingman Chris Mainwaring died a fortnight ago, it is particularly upsetting and belief defying for all Eagle’s supporters to hear of this news today. Regardless of the outcome of this incident with Ben Cousins let’s hope we can put this insanity behind us and move forward. Life is too short.

When will our ‘annus horriblus’ end? When Judd left, I felt as the club and players could re-group and give the flag a pretty good shake in ‘08.
But sans Cousins I think we will struggle. Even more so if the AFL determines there’s PR benefit in stripping us of draft picks, which were hard earned thanks to Judd and his club of choice - the serial salary cap cheaters.
I don’t know what drug(s) he had in his posession, or if his failing to agree to submitting to a roadside test amounts to anything more than a traffic infringement. Or how two car loads of major crime squad came to happen across his ‘erratic’ diving. But there’s no denying the club, and the supporters have been forgiving of his indiscrestions time and time again. Personally, I wish you all the best Ben. The hole you leave in our club is seemingly bottomless. But in time, it will fill and sooner without the distractions that seem to follow you. And as a supporter, I want (need) the club to move on.
